Ortho-K for Myopia Control: How Overnight Contact Lenses Work

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in children, and many parents are looking for ways to slow its progression early. Ortho-k is one option that not only provides clear daytime vision without glasses or daytime contacts but can also help manage worsening myopia over time.

At SIGHT’s Farmington Multispecialty Center, we provide personalized myopia management for children and teens, including ortho-k and specialty contact lens fittings.

In this blog, we explain how ortho-k lenses work, why they’re used for myopia control, and what families can expect during treatment and follow-up care.

What is ortho-k?

Orthokeratology, commonly called ortho-k, uses specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses worn overnight. While sleeping, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye, so light focuses more clearly.

In the morning, the lenses are removed, and many patients can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or contact lenses.

The effect is temporary, so the lenses need to be worn regularly to maintain results.

How does ortho-k help with myopia control?

In addition to correcting vision, ortho-k may help slow the progression of myopia in children whose prescriptions continue worsening each year.

Managing myopia early is important because higher levels of nearsightedness are associated with an increased risk of long-term eye health complications, including:

  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma
  • Myopic macular degeneration
  • Early cataracts

Myopia control focuses on slowing progression rather than simply updating glasses prescriptions year after year.

Who may be a good candidate for ortho-k?

Ortho-k is commonly recommended for:

  • Children with progressing myopia
  • Active kids involved in sports or outdoor activities
  • Patients who dislike wearing glasses during the day
  • Children who struggle with daytime contact lenses
  • Patients with mild to moderate nearsightedness

A contact lens exam helps determine whether ortho-k is appropriate based on prescription, corneal shape, tear film quality, and overall eye health.

Are ortho-k lenses comfortable?

Most children and adults adapt well to ortho-k lenses after a short adjustment period. Since the lenses are worn while sleeping, many patients notice them less than daytime rigid lenses.

However, proper lens cleaning, follow-up visits, and consistent wear are important for maintaining comfort, vision quality, and long-term eye health.

How long does treatment last?

Myopia management is an ongoing process because children’s eyes continue developing as they grow. Many patients continue ortho-k treatment throughout childhood and adolescence while their prescription is being monitored.

Regular follow-up visits help track eye growth and determine how well treatment is controlling progression over time.

Why regular monitoring matters

Myopia progression can happen gradually, sometimes without obvious symptoms between prescription changes. Monitoring allows our eye doctors to evaluate whether treatment remains effective and whether adjustments are needed as the eyes develop.

Early management may help reduce the likelihood of higher prescriptions and future vision-related complications.

Learn whether ortho-k is right for your child

Ortho-k offers more than daytime freedom from glasses or contact lenses—it can also play an important role in long-term myopia management for growing children. Personalized testing and ongoing monitoring help determine whether it’s the right fit for your child’s eyes and lifestyle.
